You can learn too…

Asalamu’alaykum, I pray this finds you all well.

There is this notion in our muslim community that the learning and memorising of Qur’an  is only for the young. It is quite sad that many think like this especially when the majority of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) learnt the Quran at a later and much older age.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Umar ibn al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with them all) were memorising at al old age of 50+.  Umar is oft quoted to have memorised Surah al-Baqarah within a period of 5 years. It is believed he did so due to memorising up to five verses at a time and then only after having lived those verses, they moved on.  [Although there are strong arguments to suggest that these narrations are not sound, they do not add up contextually etc — the point here is that ‘age’ is not a barrier, and we have many modern day examples that we can find online if we look and search for them]

With this knowledge it gives us a point of reflection and hope that it is not impossible and memorising  so much of the Quran is not hard to do even if it be taking a verse a day.

Ramadan is fast approaching and there couldn’t be a better time to renew your intention and embark on the journey of learning the words of Allah. How beautiful would it be to be reading and memorising His words on a month that the Book was revealed in – Allahu’Akbar! Take each day as a new day to learn the new and refresh & recap on the old.

May we all be blessed with learning the Quran and living true to its words Ameen
